You don’t have to give birth to be a mother. God, who is in us all, is both father and mother. When you care for another and the earth, your motherhood shines bright!
Although Mother’s Day is a commercialized celebration, it was first intended to be a unifying band of women everywhere to refuse war as a way of resolving world problems. Julia Ward Howe was the visionary behind it just after the US Civil War. She wrote:
“Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts, whether our baptism be that of water or of tears!…We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says “Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.” ~Julia Ward Howe, 1870
Today, we continue to see carnage throughout the world – whether violence of word or body. In our deepest, inmost being, we know that things do not have to remain this way. Change can come.
May you experience loving mothering and may you bestow it upon the world around you.
